Over the centuries, both global warming and cooling periods have occurred. A change in average temperature by just a few degrees has a major impact on climate, agriculture, water resources, and living conditions. There are many factors that can alter the earth’s temperature, both natural and manmade. However, there is evidence that natural factors far outweigh human input.
For example, the dust from a single large volcano can shade much of the earth and temporarily lower the world’s temperature by a degree or more. Perhaps the greatest influence is from the sun itself. Slight variations in its energy output have a direct effect on the earth’s climates. That is not to say that we should ignore our impact on the environment. After all, the biblical mandate to subdue the earth, found in Genesis 1:28, includes responsible stewardship of the Creation. However, it is not within our ability to “save the earth” or overpower the laws of nature.
For a positive view of global climate, consider the near-constancy of earth temperature over the past century. This has been a period of unprecedented development around the world. The population has increased by billions, along with the development of automobiles, air travel, and industry. Yet the world’s global temperature has changed by only about a single degree during the past one hundred years. The steadiness of world temperature shows the stability built into the created earth and atmosphere.
