Nothing sends a surge of happiness through my heart as when my wife, Esmie, says, “I love you.” Wow! What powerful words! Likewise, nothing humbles my heart with gratitude more than when God says, “I love you.”
Did you know that God loves you and me? That’s right, Jesus said, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). The puzzling part is what “believe” means, but the astonishing piece is how God shows His love toward us. Did you ever think of that?
First, He gives us real, actual existence. Do you remember those times of deep personal reflection when you look at His creation with surprise and say to yourself something like, “I exist…I am really me…I am aware of my niche in reality,” or something like that?
This idea may seem a little too lofty and philosophical, but try taking his existence away from that little street waif wandering in Manila, and you will see how important our existence really is. What a scrap you would have on your hands as that little guy would fight desperately for his existence! God loves us so much He brought you and me into being.
Did you know that God not only brought our taste buds and palates into being, but He also gave us the mangos, oranges, and grapes to pass through our mouth and the delicious delight and pleasure that erupt from the flavor and aroma?
Consider that He gave us rods, cones and retinas in our eyes, but also the brilliant kaleidoscope of color patterns shifting and playing in the sky as the tropical sun sinks into the China Sea. Or, think of the enormous full moon as it casts its golden beam across the bay, and the thousands of tiny sparkling lights dance on the water.
As our eyes take in that sunset, He also gives us that unique, amazing capacity to gaze with wonder and awe, stunned with the beauty we behold before us as we stand on the beach with our toes curling in the warm sand beneath our feet.
It’s true. God loves you. He boldly declares it through His Bible and creation. In the next few days, you will be working at your job, paying your bills, worshipping in church, doing housework – or even shopping at Seafood City in Seattle. Consider how God might want you to respond to His love.
